Regarding Japan [28 Jan 2010|02:58pm]
"Adsis o placidusque iuves et sidera caelo
dextra feras."

Vergil's Aeneid, 4.578-9

"May you be present, O calm one, and may you serve and may you receive favorable stars in the sky."

Gratias ago vobis, Vergili Fortunaque
Percutite latus eius!

Horror [26 Jan 2010|12:48pm]
At vero Aeneas aspectu obmutuit amens,
arrectaeque horrore comae et vox faucibus haesit

~The Aeneid 4.279-80

But frantic Aeneas was made silent by the very sight,
and his hair was set upright by the horror and his voice stuck in his throat.

I recieved a piece of mail from JET - a flat, white, size 10 envelope. My immediate thought was 'college rejection letter,' but I was too excited by the prospect of contact from these people for disappointment to even register. It turned out it was only a notice of confirmation that my application had been recieved and processed along with my ID number. Even so, I'm hard-pressed to think of a time I've been more excited or anxious about something as simple as slitting open an envelope.

"You should come over and check this out. It's got kind of a Lovecraftian feel to it. Well, if you come over, it'll have more of an Anne Rice feel, if you know what I mean."

Paying it forward [25 Dec 2009|06:22pm]
When I moved back home after college, my friend Brendan gave me a 24' Toshiba TV with a built-in DVD / VCR player since he had recently upgraded. Since I recently upgraded myself, I thought I'd see if anyone else needed a new TV.

Since I got it for free, I'll be giving it for free. Let me know if you, or anyone else, would like it!

This is not the greatest dream in the world [11 Dec 2009|09:52am]
I was woken up at around 2:30 in the morning by a car alarm going off. It took me a moment to recover from being woken up so suddenly, after which I spent another minute laying in bed, waiting for the alarm to stop. When it didn't, I got out of bed (taking all the proper precautions to avoid Winter Syndrome), split the blinds with two fingers, and looked for the source. My dad's car. It had been about two minutes of solid, repetitive noise at this point with no sign of anyone else in the house stirring, so I stumbled downstairs, fished out the spare keys, and shut down the alarm. I looked outside for a moment to see if I could determine any reason for the alarm to go off and found none. I went back upstairs, got back in bed, and fell asleep.

I dreamed of a society that saw significant advances in both technology and peace. Utopias were the norm, and the haves actively worked with the have-nots. Although by no means the reason for these changes, events analysts (because they existed, and they were awesome) determined that, through cause-and-effect, the inciting incident that sparked this era was a profound dream a man had in the early hours of 12/11/09.

A particular group, dissatisfied with the way of the world (because there's always one) determined that events could not stand. Making use of a time machine, they travelled back to the night of the dream, resolving to end this era before it began.

Motherfuckers threw a rock at my dad's car.

I just read the title of this comic and my first through was "Days of air? What?" Then I read the actual comic.

It's like the linguistic nerd in me just shoved the jrpg nerd in me down some stairs.

Had a dream last night that the adult cast from A Game of Thrones were the central characters of a high-school drama tv show. The sort of thing you'd see on the CW. Robert was the quarterback and Cersei was the popular rich bitch.

I'd watch that.

Love of the language [30 Nov 2009|11:19pm]
[ music | Coheed and Cambria - Backend of Forever ]

One of the benefits of an unconjugated language is the ability to use the lack of distinction between the passive and active voices to create an air of ambiguity.

Case in point, a lyric from the song I'm listening to now: "I wish I would never hurt again." I like that it's unclear whether the intent is to never be hurt again, or to never hurt another.

I'm sure Lynne Truss understands.

The future! [24 Nov 2009|12:07pm]
I just got back from dropping off my application to the JET Program. My way there was paved with good omens; light traffic, an unforseen toll road for which I had exact change, a white Plymouth Acclaim, and a tunnel through which I held my breath.

For the most part, my life follows a relatively predictable path, but with this, the future now has a large fork ahead. I've been told that I don't try for anything, that I don't seek anything out for myself, and just accept what's given to me. I've even been told that the only reason I'm pursuing this position now is because someone has done it before me. It's true that I take the path of least resistance often; I'm very watery for being a fire sign (or am I?), but this is something for which I burn.

Recently Aeneid X.95 played a rather focal part of my life. Hopefully it is an indicator that X.284 is what lies ahead: audentis fortuna iuvat.

Sometimes when I'm bored... [18 Nov 2009|04:13pm]
Every so often I'll go back and read old posts on friends' livejournals. Rarely, it's just for kicks. More often, it's to find the full body of a back-and-forth that I recall to be funny, but that's all I can recall.

Today I started sifting through [info]psychicmayhem's journal in an attempt to track down the nephandic Michael Bolton's eternally-obfuscated real name in order to fuel my own theory on the (denied!) rumors of the Gaga-Bolton romance. I ended unsuccessfully, but did find several conversations I look back on fondly.

Odder, however, are the threads I look back on and have no recollection writing.

The answer is obvious: Monster Alex.

Dreams [13 Nov 2009|09:09am]
Has anyone else ever woken up earlier than planned, but late enough to not be able to get back to sleep proper? I woke up this morning but I wasn't done dreaming yet. I dreamt that Puffy was dead and that I was driving a car. There were others, too, many others, but I can't recall. All I do know is that they were a horde of things so mundane that it was notable that I would even dream about them. I woke up almost affronted that this was what my subconscious had to offer.

I don't recall what else I dreamt of in that indeterminate time between half-waking and actually rising, but I remember it was more of the same. Such ordinary minutia that mattered so little to me, it was almost maddening that I was having to dream it.

Learn it, motherfuckers. [07 Oct 2009|11:20am]
ambivalence
"simultaneous conflicting feelings," 1924, from Ger. Ambivalenz, coined 1910 by Swiss psychologist Eugen Bleuler (1857–1939) on model of Ger. Equivalenz "equivalence," etc., from L. ambi- "both" (see ambi-) + valentia "strength," from prp. of valere "be strong" (see valiant). A psychological term that by 1929 had taken on a broader literary and general sense.
